Ayuthaya World Heritage Tour

8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.

Ayuthaya, the former capital of Thailand, was founded in the 14th century by the Thais of the lower Chao Phraya River plain, and it soon became the dominant city-state. Its kings annexed Sukhothai in the 15th century and made Ayuthaya the largest city in Southeast Asia, deeply impressing the Europeans who began to trade with them in the 16th century. The city was sacked and burned by the Burmese in 1767, leading to the foundation of a new capital, Bangkok, after the Burmese had been driven out.

Your tour will include a visit to Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, which is still an active temple where monks reside. Thai people visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkon to not only pay respects to Buddha, but also to pay homage to one of the most respected kings in Thai history, King Naresuan the Great. Continue to Wat Mahathat. Its most famous feature, and one of the most famous places to visit in Ayutthaya, is the face of a stone Buddha peeking out from among the roots at the base of a tree. The central prang here is one of the old city’s most impressive edifices. A tour of Ayuthaya wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, one of the most impressive temples. Its literal meaning is “the temple of long reign and glorious era.” The Khmer style Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a Royal temple that was used by the king and other members of the royal family. Tour includes lunch at a local restaurant.

Marvelous Chiang Mai Crafts

8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Chiang Mai is not only well known for its beauty and its people, but it’s also famous for its unique artisanal arts and crafts. The techniques and traditional ways of making them have been passed down from one generation to the next for hundreds of years. Explore two communities and watch local artisans create their own original pieces. Loang Him Kao Alley is a community that follows the self-sufficiency economy promoted by the late King Rama IX.  By opening their village to tourists, they are able to look after their families and the entire community. Each shop in the alley is unique, and workshops are held—such as cloth dyeing, cooking and jewelry making. The key color when you walk into the community and the market is indigo; products sold use natural dyeing, and almost every vendor is dressed in white and natural blue. Participate in an indigo coloring workshop and create your own indigo scarf based on old dying traditions. Afterward, enjoy lunch a short walk down the road at a local restaurant. On the return to the hotel, visit Studio Naenna, home to a dye shop featuring eco-friendly Thai-Lao crafted textiles and experts in the natural indigo fermentation process.
