Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and, with a population of over 14 million, by far its most densely populated and largest city. A modern city humming with passion and activity, Bangkok is one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities, with magnificent temples and palaces, busy markets, and a vibrant nightlife that has something for everyone. Bangkok is a national treasure and functions as Thailand’s spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic center.

Bangkok has a reputation as an independent, dynamic and influential city. Many multi-national corporations make their regional headquarters in Bangkok, and the city is a regional force in finance and business. Its increasing influence on global politics, culture, fashion and entertainment contribute to its status as a global city.

For many, Bangkok represents the quintessential Asian capital and one of the most traveler-friendly cities in Asia. Robed monks, neon signs, graceful Thai architecture, spicy cuisine, colorful markets, traffic jams and the tropical climate come together in a happy coincidence.

Temperature – Located just north of the equator, Bangkok is a tropical metropolis that is sunny most of the year. The high humidity and warm temperature favor the growth of tropical plants; exotic orchids and bougainvillea bloom all over the city. The average high temperature in early April is 95°F, and the average low is 77°F.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is famous for its easygoing ambiance and an old quarter that has retained many of its traditional wooden houses and quiet gardens. Elegant temples are the primary tourist sites, but they are not museum pieces to be merely toured; they are living community centers where tourists are likely to be approached by monks wanting to practice their English. The most famous and fascinating temples in the city are clustered conveniently close to one another. The city is also well endowed with museums and a cultural center. Inviting craft shops, rich cuisine and friendly people enhance the city’s allure.

In recent years, the population of Chiang Mai has grown rapidly, and the city is now one of Thailand’s largest. While officially the inner city has a population of 160,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai metropolitan area has a population of well over 1 million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province. Despite the usual problems brought on by growth and the influx of tourists, Chiang Mai retains a magical charm. It is an exciting city with a rich cultural heritage offering numerous sights and activities for visitors.

Chiang Mai is located 435 miles north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains (Doi Pui) in Thailand, at an elevation of 5,528 ft. The Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River, which runs through Bangkok, also winds alongside the city.

Temperature – Chiang Mai has a tropical wet and dry climate tempered by low latitude and moderate elevation, with warm to hot weather year round, though nighttime conditions during the dry season can be cool and are much lower than daytime highs. The average high temperature in early April is 98°F, and the average low is 71°F.
